no stats indeed but from collective experience ps2 is known to be a very unreliable machine
failed thread indeed as DS is a console and there was no groud for OP's position

Your collective experience is not representative for 156 million sold PS2s. Its indeed known that launch PS2s had DRE's, but that was limited to only launch models. PS2 is still the most sold console, OP is still right, try again in the next gen.

tbh the general consensus is that PS2 had huge issues all along it's production - and on the other hand i cannot find any indication that DRE was solved at any point (nor was the only issue to begin with)
so my point still stands
PS2 being part of the knowingly high failure rate consoles
and having had one of the longest life cycles
it is only logical that a big share of the PS2 are well dead and the install might have even never reached that of the DS
