Nintendo is actually really good about that, you will find that Super Mario 3D Land is tailored towards a portable environment, it never takes long to complete a level unlike Mario Galaxy or Galaxy 2 yet it can be challenging, and there are a lot of levels that you can keep going back to. They really know what smart portable game design is, and you can clearly tell with a lot of their 3DS games that you never have to spend a long time to complete a level or 2, but that's really Nintendo alone in that department because they know what they are doing. I've never really had issues with console experiences on portables, I played the shit out of Birth by Sleep to 100% and other SE titles on PSP etc but I do have a problem with rehashs that are not really remakes (Tales re-releases in general, a lot of the FFs that are not actual remakes etc) because I think they should use their resources making new exciting games rather than wasting resources  unless they are doing complete awesome graphical overhaul remakes.

The problem right now is that the 3DS is simply too strong and dominant at a really good value, that's why Sony can't compete on the same level right now, they need to figure something out or the shit is going to hit the fan really fast.

Nintendo has some rock solid IPs that are always going to be sure to rake in sales. Their pedigree in the gaming industry is just too powerful. This is not to say though that Sony has not put out a comparable(and depending on the gamer, better) assortment of games available in the portable space.

LBP Vita > NEW Super Mario Bros 2/Super Mario 3D Land by like a mile with what is capable in that game, although with all this media hate mongering you wouldn't even know. LBP Vita is admittably the BEST in the series yet some how is the lowest rated(both LBP1 and 2 hold a 9+ on Meta).....what?! It fits the console like a glove, I personally just always felt platformers worked best on Handheld due to their naturally portable nature, makes no sense to me. And most of the spin-off games for Vita like Uncharted are tailored with portability in mind too. U:GA missions are much shorter, and concentrate on exploring and puzzle solving a bit more than normal. Gyroscope aiming also works like a dream in that game. Super Stardust is an addiction for me and their are a plethera of game modes and tasks to complete, plus custome soundtracks with it make it so much fun.

And Remakes like Persona 4:Golden are an insta sell for me, I loved that game and have no qualms with picking it up again with extra goodies seeing as it was so good the first time around. I would put Persona 4 as my second favorite RPG of all time, so this is probably a given. I imagine it is the same for those with Zelda Orcarina of Time 3D and MGS3 on 3DS.

Do I want games like Bravely Default and Pokemon? Damn right I do, but I figure I would go with the handheld with many series I cherrish more, and just hope for a port or similar game to come for it later down the line.

In the same time frame, Sony has put out a stellar line-up of games which you can take a peek at here for reference...
