I think what's going to happen is CoD: Modern Warfare 4 will be on PS3/360/Wii U ... but the superior versions will all the next-gen engine effects and 1080p resolution etc. etc. etc. are going to be on PS4/720/PC. There's basically going to become a split in the market, with devs making high end versions for the PS4/720/PC and probably a lower end team assigned to make the PS3/360/Wii U versions. Guess which version CoD fanatics are going to want. |
The one for the system they own?
Beyond that, we will have to see what Sony and Microsoft produce next generation but I'm doubtful that you will see substantial enhancements to graphics, higher resolutions, and better frame-rates at the same time. Certainly, if Microsoft and Sony are willing to produce a large and expensive console, you might be able to take a game that pushes the Wii U at 720p@30fps and output it at 1080p@60fps, or they might be able to produce substantial visual improvements at 720p@30fps; but the hardware needed to do both at the same time is far too expensive and produces too much heat to be put in a home console. Essentially, it would require a GPU similar to the ones being released in graphics cards that are manufactured at a 28nm process and still use over 175 Watts; and probably one of the ones that use closer to 250 Watts.
Basically, the hardware needed to take an existing HD console game from 720p@30fps to 1080p@60fps is inexpensive and energy efficient; if you put two or three times the processing power towards graphics and render at 720p@30fps (something the Wii U should be able to do) it will be moderately expensive and moderately high heat production to output that at 1080p@60fps; and to push graphics beyond that while maintaining 1080p@60fps output would require hardware that will be more expensive than the HD consoles were at launch that produce more heat. While that is theoritically possible, I doubt either Sony or Microsoft would do that.
