It's an interesting thing to ponder, I think the problem with this though is that Microsoft would likely release a system one year down the line that would outperform that system comfortably, which would likely damage Sony pretty badly with the hardcore gamer they go after.
It wouldn't be $300 though, you're talking probably more like $399.99.
