Actually, logic56 has a point. (I can't believe I am saying this.) Sony's original expectations for the PSV were around 5m units LTD at this point, a far cry from the 10m you stated. Regarding competition, it's really not needed. If the market doesn't buy, then a company needs to act, even if it holds a monopoly. In the handheld market, that was the GBA. Despite no competition, Nintendo launched the GBA SP with clamshell design, backlight and built-in battery. They also kept releasing great games and everything was at acceptable prices. Video games are goods that are not essential for life, so even a monopoly doesn't enable a company to do whatever it wants. Also, most consumers prefer one dominant machine each generation, because it means they only have to buy one piece of hardware to get all (or the majority of) the games they want. |
The GBA launched alongside the NeoGeo Pocket colour another machine with similar layout, close to Snes levels of graphics and some pretty nice games, then 3 years later the Nokai Ngage caused quite a stir leading up to is delayed launch was exactly when nintendo dropped the GBAsp. Sure in terms of numbers those machines didn't do too great but that isn't to say that Nintendo didn't factor in the Ngage which was about to have ports from the GBA + a backlite screen when it comes to making the SP
Re the 10m comment, the actual sony figure is probably very diluted in all the OTT fan predictions tho, my bad.
