I just don't see SONY selling 3 home consoles at the same time, which means they need to have a single console that covers PS3/PS2 games. I think 1 or 2 years from now when PS4 comes out there is a distinct possibility to have a cheep system that includes both cell and a SOC that can emulate the PS2. Given how easily the psone can be emulated (original xbox/wii can do it) there really isn't any point to for it not to be able to have backwards compatibility with those games. As for Gaikai not using your physical media, it could easily, all the ps4 would need to be able to do would be acknowledge that your system had the correct blu ray disk in the drive of whatever ps3 game you had and then give you access to it on the cloud, exactly the same as the xbox360 with installed games from your harddive.
