Ugh, as usual, yet another team rolls over and dies for the Cards in the playoffs, along with their typical luck. I would not be surprised if they waltz their way to yet another world series. *BARF*
Seriously, 3 errors by the Braves? And that infield fly rule call by the ump was ridiculous. That ball clearly landed in the outfield. I swear, the Cards are the anti-Cubs in terms of luck in the post season..

God I hate them.

The infield fly rule has nothing to do with where the ball lands.  Watch this for a good explaination of the rule.

Ok, I get the rule that if the infielder catches it without extra effort it's ruled an infield fly, I just think it's a flawed rule in some respects. If all it takes for it to be an infield fly rule is for the infielder to make the catch, couldn't the infielder just drift even farther back into the outfield on a towering pop fly and make a catch in order to stop a potential sac fly from occuring?

And going back to the "without extra effort," well to me it looked like the short stop DID require an "extra effort" to drift back and set himself up to make the catch.

I just think it's bizzare that you can put a ball in play that does not get caught, doesn't even get thrown in attempt to throw out a baserunner, and still somehow record an out.

Yes, the infield fly rule can technically be applied all the way out to the warning track.  It never happens though.  The two examples shown in the video are as deep as I have seen.  The infield fly rule does not stop runners from advancing.  They need to tag if it is caught, and they don't have to tag if it is dropped.  That is how the two Braves' runners were able to both advance a base on the play.  It cannot stop a sacfly.

The way the rule is applied, it is if the infielder can get to the ball under control.  So no diving catches or running catches.  Kozma was clearly under control.  He came to a complete stop under the ball until he thought he heard Holliday call him off.

The orgin of the rule is so that infielders cannot drop easy fly balls to start a double or triple play.  By calling the batter out early, it makes it so that the runners are not forced to advance.
