If I couldn't pre-order I would probably wait until the new year to pick one up, but I can understand how a few people would be willing to pay such high prices for a system ...
If you're earning enough money and have low enough expenses the difference in spending $349 and $600 on a console is not that significant, and for someone who really wants to get their kids the "Best Christmas Gift Ever!" I could understand them spending the extra money.
