To treat a franchise like a specific genre is to strangle its potential.
I've seen great franchises die because fans could not except a different new entry, even if it's awesome in its own way (and in one case I've seen, leagues better than what came before). You could see it as a franchise abandoning its previous fans, but then I must say that closed-minded fans are not worth having.
