Depends how old his daughter is, my daughter is 3 and i wouldnt buy her a WiiU as i feel its an expensive piece of kit for a kid to be messing about with. With the Wii being cheaper it would be a no brainer for me as you can also pick up a majority of games dirt cheap, and the Wiimotes are pretty robust if she deciedes to peg one across the living room (i wouldnt want her to do that to my gamepad). In fact when i get my WiiU my daughter will inherit my Wii, on the condition that Daddy can still use it for Gamecube.
I dont think Wiiu will suffer for lack of casual games because at the moment Nintendo are focusing on drawing in the "hardcore" gamers, i believe that casual stuff will appear later on down the line. I also think that Nintendo should still be pushing its motion controls to keep the casuals interested.
