I don't know of much recent ones...
Nexus: The Jupiter incident.
It starts out really slow, because everything takes a while to die until you get a better ship fleet. It's my favorite Single Player RTS.
Starcraft 2, and Supreme Commander (when it actually had a community, were my favorite multiplayer ones.
