That still is not how it works. Every damaged return will be inspected if it is worth repairing or not, nothing is "repaired immediately". Every repair centre had/s a pile of already repaired units, a pile of damaged units, and a pile of new units. Depending on how high these piles were, and how long the centre can delay sending back a unit, you might have received a brand new unit. There were many reports of people getting a new unit, not a refurbished one.

the RRoD issue is a single flaw in the hardware, using a hippy friendly non lead based solder to hold the heatsink onto the GPU, how long you think it takes to determine what happened to each model that returns?

Edit - what I mean by this is bolded now, it's not like they opened up some of them to find that the insides had turned into potatoes or something it was the same fix required on almost every return.
