I played a WiiU today, ZombiU.

I am now convinced the gamepad adds nothing in a way of good gameplay experience, looking between the two screens is just disjointing and the experience doesn't feel like it benefits really, no more than doing it on the TV screen could have..

I will dare to say the control pad feels like the worst designed first party controller since the Dreamcast. Screw gaming on that, no wonder they made the XBox-like controller as an option.

I'm a bit concerned about this as well. The dual screen thing worked fine on the DS, though then again the screens were mere centimeters apart, and you don't have to look up and down from screen to screen.

I don't really plan on looking down at my controller too much though. My main expectations in terms of functionality is to use as a quick glance for a map screen or item screen where I can quickly tap the item I want to use. I think for that purpose it'll work quite well. I don't really plan on using for long periods of time like Zombi U seems to require, and I don't think most games will require you to look down at the touchscreen too much anyway. To me the controller is a nice little feature, but it's more of an afterthought. I don't expect it to be the focus of the console, much like the dual screen/touch screen funcionality wasn't a main focus for most DS games. It's just a neat little add on that could make things (like maps and item screens) more convenient.

Though, I also like the idea of switching your entire game to the gamepad while the TV can be used by someone else, and I can see myself doing that a lot. The thought of playing the next Zelda game kicking back on my couch while my family watches TV in the same room is pretty cool actually. I will probably use it more for that functionality more than what Nintendo is hyping as "asymetrical gameplay"
