It is really not that hard to believe. There is nothing telling the HD twins they need to come out now. WiiU is not marking the start of Next Gen, it just isnt. The hardware is just too close to what we currently already have. I think it has completely cemented the mind set MS and Sony take towards Nintendo, they just have an entirely different strategy and market. The next systems from MS and Sony will have a pretty massive leap in capabilities I am sure. If this mattered at all to the Big 3 why the hell would NIN release the WiiU so under powered(I say this because it is only barely above current gen)? They don't feel affected by each other. So....taking that into consideration what would be forcing them to launch next year? Nothing, and it just seems to be a foolish move when there is so much more profit to be had this gen. The idea that the second the next consoles are announced, they can kiss those profits goodbye.
Yes the profits have dropped Y/Y...but what do you think will happen with the Next generation? I do not believe sales are slowing because of disinterest, it is the economy which has forced many would be buyers to wait longer before they are able to get one. Its not a sprint but a marathon. This gen is just selling at a much slower pace than previous ones do to this fact. All of this will be moot tho if they announce PS4. Sony already made it clear they think Each Generation should last more than the previous 5 year cap. They have stated time and time again that PS3 would be around for 10+ years. Sony has some very large AAA games coming Next year as well, and a few others still waiting to be dated. I think they want to capitalize on those games sales, and not cap them like they ended up doing the GOW games on PS2. Also, even if sales are off the charts right now, PS360 has quite a few price cuts left in them before they should throw in the towel. Wasn't $150 when the PS2 started selling like crack?
And the WiiU's supposed lead if they are to delay, assuming that Sony or MS even care, will not have any large impact on PS4/720. Take the 3DS for example, sold what...5million its first year? Then the following year it is past 15million! They tripled their sales in no time at all. If 3DS can make that kind of an about face in a years time why not next gen HD consoles? Wii came out a Year after 360, outsold both of the other consoles. You guys make 2 years sound like an eternity, it is really not that long of a time. The WiiU is doing what right now? Padding its library with Multiplatform games that released on PS360 a year ago....a few NIN exclusives here and there. Only the NIN faithful are gonna be taking that early leap. And definitely not going to have the same effect this gen had with the death of the 3rd Party exclusive. In that time PS4/720 will be 3 times as powerful and at a comparably decent price to whatever WiiU is at the time.
In general I don't think many 3rd Parties or the Big Three are even ready for "Next Gen". With it comes a even higher benchmark when they struggled so hard just to stay afloat this gen. They need to perfect on what they have learned now, and regroup strategies on how to tackle bigger developments next gen.
