This just gives some sort of balance. He is at worst, a decent human being who doesn't share your ideas. Fine. Stop lambasting him as the anti-Christ (not directed at you, but at his critics in general).

There needs to be a catchy term for arguments which use the most strident/shrill/maniacal members of a group as a weapon against the group itself.

Point is, achieving civility in political discourse is as tricky as achieving peace in an armed conflict. Whoever tries to make a unilateral gesture is going to get cut down in a hail of machine-gun fire/attack ads.
