I guess ME1 benefitted a lot from being the first one. It was enjoyable in the way that The Gunslinger or the first season of Lost was enjoyable, since you're discovering this new world and it seems like anything can happen. Everyone is happy with that. But once you start putting a finer point on things, and especially when you start wrapping things up, you're bound to piss people off by taking a direction they didn't expect and don't like. It doesn't help when you have a legitimately shitty ending, which both Mass Effect and Lost did. I agree that Sovereign was a great, menacingly vague first enemy because you really didn't know what he wanted (other than to fuck your shit up, of course). And he was a giant spaceship with a scary voice, which was great. But Kai Leng was annoying as shit and he fucking killed Thane and killing him was far more satisfying than killing Saren's corpse. Sometimes a pathetic bitch can be an effective villain! |
I was in awe of Kai Leng in a way I was of Raiden in Metal Gear Solid 4 . The computer and cinematics was having more fun than I was in ME3.
