The top screen actually has a resolution of 800 x 240.   When in 2D mode, it only renders 400 x 240.  When in 3D mode, it uses all 800 pixels across.  That's a differenc ein rendering 192,000 pixels and just 96,000 piels.

Each vertical line of pixels alternates to display the scene shifted just a little so that each eye sees the scene from the appropriate angle to generate a 3D image.

But as you can see, in 3D mode, you have render twice as many pixels as in 2D mode for that top screen.

 

And, of course, you still have the 76,800 pixels on the bottom screen to render in both modes.
