Google displays G+ threads that appear in the top 10 of a search for users that are googling while logged into Gmail or whatever, and that is really helping the growth. The expectation was that G+ would reach 400 million accounts by the end of the year, but it did so earlier than expected.
Btw, Twitter had 140 million active users in march of this year.....Google just posted the stat of having 100 million active users ( and the total number of accounts, 400 million) , so it has a bit more to go to reach the status of twitter, but regardless, it seems doable now. Then go visit Twitter.
Now tell me with a straight face that G+'s "active users" are as active as Twitter's "active users". The same goes for Facebook. G+ is a B-level social network and it will be until Google finds a way to get the average person to start using the service like they do Facebook and Twitter.
Shit, I like Google+. I think it has loads of potential and I defended the shit out of Google when they implemented the single login system to make G+ work properly. But right now, it's mostly a ghost town. Why? Because it has no discernible advantage over Facebook or Twitter in their respective markets. It's too much of a "me too!" implementation of social networking. People are comfortable with Facebook and Twitter. They have no reason to jump ship to a platform that offers few (if any) advantages.
