i don't think they are dying. yes we will get almost no singleplayer only games in the future in some genres except for some indie-games and other games will be only multiplayer but most games will have both and most of them won't be much wort as they were without multiplayer. the problem why in my opinion some franchises aren't like they were in the past isn't multiplayer, it's the "i want to see explosions and fast paced action every three meter, if in single or multiplayer" crowd which made games like resident evil to what they are.
personally i have no problems with it, the singleplayer experiences of most games are still good for me and i'm adaptive so i can also live very good with the change in many franchises from what they were to what they are now. sometimes i even prefer it.
and at least i was always a big multiplayer fan^^ if it was on snes with secret of mana or super tennis, n64 with goldeneye or dreamcast and soul calibur, playing with friends was always a big part of my gaming life. i love halo in singleplayer but i love it even more with friends in coop mode. same was with ghost recon advanced warfighter 2 or other games, i can't really understand why people don't like to play the games with friends and want to play it alone, it's not as if your friends would scream like idiots all the time like some randoms in multiplayer and sure, a game like amnesia has to be a singleplayer experience.
