I voted in the poll for the first option (7,5,3,2,1). I think it's unlikely for the same person to take the top few spots every week, and this point distribution allows more players to earn points. Then, if there's a group of people who score in the top 5 regularly, we could end up with a relatively close distribution of points among a larger number of players which I think would make the later part of the league more interesting.
As for reminders... I suppose you could ask if they even want to keep participating or not. It doesn't matter too much though, if you don't mind just recording a 0-16 week for those players.
