They should have just built it like it's current cousins, the WiiU gamepad and the Wii U Classicl Pro Controler. Make the 4 buttons adjacently across from the D-Pad, and the two circle pads adjacently across as well. They have a whole right section of the 3DS that is empty.

I personally don't care as I no longer own one, but clearly it is pissing customers off who have to lug around a clunky external device for an experience that is supposed to be mobile

Nobody's forcing you to buy it, it's there for people who want it. There isn't anywhere in the XL that an extra slidepad would fit either.

What do you mean it can't fit anywhere?  We must not be looking at the same picture.  Move the "a,b,x,y" buttons down to be perfectly across from the D-Pad, and then put the 2nd circle pad where the "a,b,x,y" buttons were.  There is no excuse especially with a revision where they had more room to contemplate an accomidation.  The worst thing they've done is make it so that both movement options are on the same side.  I don't think people would really mind at all "strafing" with the D-pad and moving with the circle pad.

Personally I'm suprised that technology hasn't imporved enough to have a hybrid D-Pad+Circle Pad/joystick option.  A D-Pad that swivels so to speak.  I remember playing on an old NES controller that had something like that, it was an 8 directional pad that sort of swiveled.
