I find it's easy to say after the fact what was successful and what wasn't successful, kind of like when someone tries to open a lid and fails, but the person who comes after pops it open easily. It's not as simple as it seems. To me, those ads served their purpose in preparing the ground for what Apple did afterwards and imho it worked. I don't have surveys, but I can tell you that those ads shocked me and made a statement to me, and many other people I know.
