1) Doesn't matter, if iOS was so unquestionably better to the vast majority of people than the number of alternatives wouldn't matter. It is because the average user doesn't see much of a difference and one of the Android phones better meets their immediate needs that Android is more popular.
2) Using more functions does not mean that they use more than the shallow capabilities of their device.
3) Windows is pretty iconic but I have seen people skin Ubuntu to look similar to Windows and the vast majority of users couldn't tell the difference. The average iPhone use would think (when using Android) "oh, Apple changed the icons". If you didn't realize it, one of the reasons Apple sued Samsung over the look and feel is because if someone copies Apple's look and feel with Android the typcial user couldn't tell a difference between the phones.

Hum... no. The common consumers don't choose their cell phones based on OS knowledge. They do it mostly based on the size of their wallets.
Also, the iPhone has been the most successful single model phone. But of course there's a lot more Android phones sold every years. There are hundreds of models, for all kind of budget. You seem to have the idea that the average Joe is buying an OS before buying a phone based on his budget, or service provider. You couldn't be more wrong.

Actually most consumers (which are idiots like most humans are) choose their phone base on how popular it is, how present it is in the media and how they can increase their social status with it.

Yeah... because the Galaxy Ace is everywhere in the media! Yet it's still selling quite a lot here. ¬_¬
Same goes for any LG phones.
Really... You shouldn't take what you see on the tech and specialized websites as indications for what sells most to the unaware average Joe.
