Console gaming pushes forward the industry as a whole, personally I couldn't care less. I use my PC for most of my gaming needs, and I doubt any new consoles will be much better (if better at all) then what I'm playing on now.
It is important because I think most developers will only really push themselves on "cutting edge" hardware.
