12/31 is a standard place-holder date for the end of the 4th Quarter. When you see that, 95% of the time it just means that the actual shipping date is unconfirmed. It will almost certainly be updated closer to launch. It's possible that they want to have the physical product on hand before giving a concrete date. Also, I believe Wal-mart has preferential status with Nintendo. Their preorder cap is probably much, much larger than other retailers. That status is considered by many to be part of the reason Amazon told Nintendo to go jump off a cliff. |
I didn't check out Walmart right after the price announcement but chances are that it previously said "ships on 11/18", same as Best Buy and Gamestop did, and same as the WiiU software still does.
There will be more stock provided between launch and Xmas - just as there was with the Wii in its launch year - so if you were to order right now, it's possible that you could get it before 12/31, but pre orders for the initial launch shipment of deluxe SKUs seems to be sold out everywhere here in the states.
