I believe that sony just believed that their fans would continue to blindly buy and support whatever they did, which certain was not the case at all in the end and allmost destroyed the playstation brand.
I think you hit the nail on the head with sony fans being disgruntled by the playstation move, people spend $600, or in my country the equivalent to $1000 dollars for a unique experience when they bought a ps3, not for a wii clone.
