Sales for consoles in general have improved, yes, but neither of the HD twins could lead over the other enough to topple sales of the PS1 or the PS2, which was the point the OP was making.
The PS2 shared the market with two consoles as well, but without anything unique amongst them, PS2 soared into the lead, which was the point the OP was making: That the Wii, with its new hook, captured a lot of the market.
