Nintendo probably released the 3DS with the idea that at $250, they would eventually release their next console $100 more $350.
Seeing as to how that did not go over well, and the $80 price drop happened, they are probably going $50 less and releasing Wii U at an even $300. With the Wii's unprecedented success, they lost a bundle by releasing at $250, but hindsight is always 20/20.
