What would the Jokers role have been in Gotham if he had been in TDKR?

But if Ledger was actually alive, how would Nolan have used him? Or do you think he still would have just forgot about him? Nolan seems to try to make things as realistic as possible for a super hero movie. I would think he would have had to actually used him in some way.
