While the PlayStation brand has a long history of nearly unplayable shovelware, it's also the home to some of the best games ever made. The first PlayStation launched just a little over 15 years ago in Japan, so there are plenty of awesome games to choose from. Since this list only consists of eight spots you shouldn't be surprised if you won't see some of your personal favorites. But let's get started, here's the best of the best that the PlayStation brand has to offer.

8. Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars (PSP)

A great game, loved by critics and gamers pirates alike. It really pushed the PSP to its limits and commiting crimes was more fun than ever before. Many people doubted that a game of this scope would be possible on Sony's handheld.

7. Final Fantasy Anthology (PS1)

Can you think of anything better than a great game with incredible value? No? Well, FFA is actually two great games for the price of one. Experience two of the series' best games (V and VI), now with glorious FMVs tossed in. Not that they make the games any better, but all that space of a CD had to be used for something, because each of the games is only about 3 MB big (yes, three).

6. Tales of Symphonia (PS2)

Certainly one of the best JRPGs ever created, at least according to Soriku. An intense battle system makes up for forgettable characters and the explosions of the human farms are jaw dropping. You simply won't believe that this is actually a PS2 game you are playing. Unfortunately, this title was only released in the land of the rising sun.

5. The Orange Box (PS3)

Half-Life 2, Episode 1, Episode 2, Team Fortress and the innovative puzzle FPS Portal, all in one neat package. Some people criticized this game for having framerate issues, but looking at this picture, I can't notice any. Must be my eyes or something.

4. Resident Evil: Code Veronica X (PS2)

This game is so good that even Steve Burnside's voice couldn't ruin it. For the first time in franchise history, Resident Evil used real time 3D environments instead of prerendered backgrounds. It paid off as the game is breathtaking as everyone can see from this screenshot. It looks kinda like a Nintendo 64 game without the fog.

3. Viewtiful Joe (PS2)

That's a real hardcore game right there. This isn't a game for wimps by any means. Viewtiful Joe is cool and he has attitude, but even better, Dante from Devil May Cry is an unlockable character. At times this game is so cool that hell almost freezes over.

2. Final Fantasy Chronicles (PS1)

Yet another Final Fantasy game, although this time it's not just about Squaresofts most popular brand. In addition to the much beloved Final Fantasy IV you will also find one of the greatest JRPG classics on this disc: Chrono Trigger. Once again, there are some FMVs added to these games, Square simply had to use the other 640 MB of the CD for something.

1. Resident Evil 4 (PS2)

Any observer of websites like Metacritic or Gamerankings knew that this was going to take the top spot, so it should come as no surprise. Forming one's own opinion is pretty stupid, if you can just lean back and let others do that job for you. Resident Evil 4 is the best rated PS2 game according to Gamerankings and the third best one on Metacritic. Boom! Headshot!
