Same as it ever was. It's the same tribalism we see repeated in politics, religion, sports, and every other sphere. People need an "other" to despise to assure themselves that their group (and by association. themselves) are righteous and true.

For many people, Apple was that "other" in the 90s when Microsoft conquered the PC market, and it's only gotten worse as Apple garners more popularity and success. How can Apple keep earning more money and loyal customers when they're so evil/wrong/greedy/stupid/deceptive? The tribal can only reconcile this trend by twisting new layers of cognitive dissonance and hatred around his psyche.

I don't mean to say that you cannot dislike Apple products without being a victim of your own psychology. All products embody certain values to the exclusion of other values. But it's pretty easy to tell the difference between somebody who doesn't find Apple products to his taste and somebody with an emotional investment in despising all things fruity.

"The worst part about these reviews is they are [subjective]--and their scores often depend on how drunk you got the media at a Street Fighter event."  — Mona Hamilton, Capcom Senior VP of Marketing
