There is Uncharted, which by itself is over 0.6 million, but it was released in 2011 fo Japan. Other than that, the Vita sales are pretty dismal. Admittedly, VGChartz doesn't count digital sales. But the same can be said about Mario, so fair's fair.

It's funny that you say that Vita sales are dismal. Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4 was released in Japan in 2008 for PS2. PS2 sold ~ 20 million units that far in Japan, and the game sold 360000 copies. PSV didn't even break 1 million units in Japan, and Persona 4 Golden sold 210000 copies. Tales of Innocence was released in Japan in 2007 for NDS and on again ~20 million units sold 290000  copies. And again on under million Vita's sold the remake Tales of Innocence R sold 90000 copies. So what's exactly dismal here?

About the DL copies. Since there are "download cards" that are carried by retailers, aren't the digital numbers (or most of them) already included into total sales of NSMB2?

About those "download cards".  I bought two copies of NSMB2.  One from the store and one digitally for my kid.  The one I bought digitally didn't require going to a store because all of my info and a security code are stored in the 3DS.  I'm sure a small number of people that bought digitally actually went to the store where a retail copy was sold and decided to buy a card, go home, and download it.  I'm willing to bet a bigger number of people just used their credit card and bought it.

The benefits of retail:  You have a physical copy that you can sell or loan.  Not tied to any particular system.  No worries about system memory.

The benefits of downloading:  You get what you want almost instantly and you don't have to worry about carrying/losing a game cart

Unless you're afraid of using your credit card on the 3DS (which is understandable) or you just don't have a card, I don't see why anybody would go with a retail download card.  Things aren't biased in Nintendo's favor.  The Vita has the exact same thing going for/against it.
