Agreed 100% here too. The X-box 360/PS3 jump was excessive, in my opinion. I think they jumped a generation with the tech and price that they used. Nintendo I think lowballed it, making the wii kinda generation+0.5. That said, I think the WiiU is placed exactly where it should be, with only incremental inprovements expected from PS and Microsoft.

Personally, I think that Nintendo could have been very successful by designing a system that retained the lighting and texturing effects of the Gamecube/Wii but increased the polygonal and texture detail and rendered at 720p.

While a system like that may not be able to achieve "photo-realism", few people would be upset with the quality of graphics that could have been provided; and the cost of hardware and game development costs would have still been very reasonable.
