I don't think so, no.  I'd never played a Growlanser game and I'm having no problem following it.  it's as any JRPG should be though, long and very story driven.  

You should've at least played Generations.

I didn't have much of a choice in the matter, it was "hey, we have a code for Growlanser IV, anyone want it?"  and nobody else did, so I took it. 

Random question Runa, but why didn't anyone one wanna atleast try it?  Or would they rather just play their safe bets instead?

Growlanser is super niche and obscure, so those who may know about it (Tor) probably didn't want to take it as it would easily eat 50 hours.
