Wow, you fuckin blew my mind right there.  I've played Mega Man X many times and never realized that because I never changed the order of those bosses you mentioned.  The only one I noticed was that the elephant stage sometimes had flowing lava, and sometimes it was frozen over - I'm guessing now it's related to the chill penguin, but damn that's cool.  I've played the bosses in different orders before, but I've never mixed it up a whole lot, just a little.  Next time I play it I'll be sure to mix it up big time.

That being said, although I think that is an awesome replay value mechanism, I don't think it fits Mario games much.  My main emphasis for Mario would just non-generic worlds.  Dark world from Mario Bros. 3 was awesome.  Pipe world was cool as well.  I mean these developers need to be creative and let loose.  I'd rather them fail taking a risk that no risk and suceeding with generic levels I have played already from nsmbw

How about a wind world?  The wind constantly playing a factor in terms of jumping ability like how ice in the ice world is always a factor.  How about a hybrid ice/fire world like from Galaxy 1?  How about a hybrid Huge/mini world like from Mario 64?  Hybrid themes are cool, and work very effectively in other fictional universes like Magic the Gathering.  How about a sly Casino/club theme for a bad guy world?  There are tons of Mario games to go back to and draw inspiration from that there is no excuse for a rehash of nsmbw, ESPECIALLY since they did it twice now with nsmb2.

I think the only stages that change like that are the ones I mentioned and the one you mentioned (I actually forgot about that, since starting with Chill Penguin is a no-brainer for me because of the Dash upgrade [can't see why they couldn't just give them during the intro stage]), but yeah, it's pretty neat. I would love to see that kind of stuff used in a bigger way, like, say, in a mainline Super Mario game.

You and Soleron pretty much summed up all of my problems with the NSMB games: the same old element-themed worlds, the recycled carousel music (show of hands: who here wasn't already tired of this theme by 2009?) and the general feeling that Nintendo isn't even trying.
