Personally, I believe the reason Metroid Prime started to decline was due to 1) focus on graphics/realistic environments, 2) increased competition from similar games and 3) "hardcore" gamers skipping the Wii altogether after owning a GC. So yeah, I may be wrong, but I mainly blame the hardware.

You just posted the sales of the Metroid games. Your third point is contradicted by the sales numbers for Echoes and Corruption. Your second point is contradicted by the lack of similar games. If you want something like Metroid Prime, there is only Metroid Prime. Your first point... just forget about it. So how about this:

After a break of eight years (1994-2002), there was much hype surrounding the release of Metroid Prime. It's one of a kind and the first of its kind, so who knows how many of the people who bought it really liked it. Based on videos and screenshots it could easily be mistaken for a straightforward sci-fi FPS and these people's expectations weren't met. This led to significantly lower sales for Echoes. Based on the sales of Corruption, the actual GC fanbase moved over and some more people tried it out.

Yes, Metroid Prime was one of a kind and first of its kind, but people didn't want more of that kind because it didn't really expand from there. If we compare it to the Halo series, the first one featured local multiplayer and system link multiplayer while the second one offered online multiplayer. That's a massive leap which made players enjoy the multiplayer a lot more this time around.

Metroid Prime 2? They added local multiplayer for up to four people. An almost unnecessary feature when compared to the single player, which from what I understand isn't to much different from the first one. (only played the second and short periods of the first one myself). And the gameplay and unlockable armour abilities are almost completely the same in both games.

I don't think over a million people bought the first game and were disappointed. I think they enjoyed it but preferred titles offered by the competition over Metroid Prime 2.
