A big reason why he is able to fool, or at least able to sow doubt in a fair amount of people is because many forum members have below average social skills and understanding of psychology. And because we have this need for shock and sensation and to hear other people's misery (and feel better about ourselves).

Apparently someone by the name of Minami pulled a similar stunt a bit before this guy, and many people thought it was a troll until he actually got arrested. I'm not saying this is the same scenario, though. I really loved the comments that the other "go for it, man! She loves you!" trolls were doing. :P
