If anyone wants to wallow in grief here, that's their business I get. But, allow me to paraphrase a story.

A boy was madly in love with a female friend of his. On valentines day, he bought roses, he bought chocolates, and went to the girl's house to share his feelings. The girl laughed and slammed the door in his face.

Later his friends came to him to express their sympathy, but the boy didn't seem distraught in the least. A friend of his asked, "Aren't you upset?"

The boy said "Why should I be upset? She lost someone who loved her. I lost someone who didn't love me."

All about perspective.

Or, he lost someone he loved, and she lost someone she didn't love. Since that's the direction both of their emotions were traveling in, that's why in the real world he would be the one upset and she wouldn't be hurt.

But that is a cute story and I did like it.
