I would say it is better than the first so far. The game is massive 10h in and I am still in the first area lol, and I just got my seccond proper dungeon solving item. Which is not to say that the dungeons I have done haven't each added new puzzle mechanics, just they weren't in the form of an item that you got. The side quests are mostly fetch style quests but they give incentive to explore the world and enter side dungeons. The combat is fast and fun, the no blocking mechanic insures that you are constantly moving. Death is a very agile character and fast travel makes getting round the world painless. The art direction is great and even better than the first game in places. Bosses are good but nothing amazing so far but they keep them interesting. Music is generally very good as well, but the voice acting can be a bit hit or miss.
Now for negatives there is a bit of a lack of polish. The UI is clunky in places and there are issues like for the map there is a prompt saying to press the A button (for 360 controller) but pressing the left stick actually changes it, and you have to use the right stick to scroll arround the map. On the more technical side there are a lot of low res textures and backgronds/skyboxes tho considering the size of the world it's kinda understandable, tho it i a pitty that the great art can't be properly enjoyed in all it's glory at least on a high spec PC. Alos there is a lot of popin on the overworld, which is pretty barren for the most part. On PC there is a distinct lack of graphics options with just resolution and VSync (which doesn't seem to work properly, I forced it and FXAA in the driver which works great), pre release one of the devs said there would be a config file for those that wanted it but that is MIA whith just an empty config folder in the install directory, which is a shame as the shadows are really low res. There are a few camera issues as well during frantic combat, with massive enemies blocking the screen lol.
The game is a bit on the easy side so far (playing on hard) but that might be because I am using some of the pre-order/DS1 achivement/register gear, and doing side quests. There is also no fall damage at all even when you fall into lava etc, which makes the platforming elements (which aren't especially hard) rather trivial. Tho I am still early game so that might ramp up.
Overall it's a tonne of fun and a really great game so far.
