It does not need to be the best. That's subjective. It just needs to be enjoyable.

It should strive to be the best. The industry needs it. (and so does the 3DS)

@mothman. Which games are considered Shin Megami Tensei? Are all the branches still considered part of the Megami Tensei series?

SMT1, SMT2, SMT If..., SMT: Strange Journey, SMT3/Nocturne, and SMT Nine (though I don't know if Atlus considers Nine on the same level as the others since it supposedly wasn't that good and it wasn't even developed by Atlus).

Games like Persona, Devil Survivor, Devil Summoner, and Digital Devil Saga aren't labeled with a "SMT" in Japan but they're still labeled like that in the West. They're all similar in ways (especially because they use the share the same demons, or in the Persona games, Personas) so I personally just put them all under the SMT label. But the ones I posted above, as well as SMT4, are the ones that are officially "SMT" games, though SMT1-4 are the only mainline games though a few others are called SMT as well.

What Soriku said. We call 'em all SMT games in NA.
