i think what makes sony different is they seem (from what i've seen) the only game developer that will intentionally move on from a popular franchise.  spyro, crash, jak and daxter.  now sly does have a 4th installment coming now but sucker punch moved on to develop infamous leaving sly fallow for almost 8 years and if the rumors are true they already moved on from infamous to work on another new IP.  naughty dog is now bring out the last of us instead of just more uncharted and have hinted at uncharted ending at the end of this gen.  media molecule has gone on the record as no longer working on little big planet so even though the franchise is coming to vita soon we won't get another MM one.  team ico only seems to work on new IPs being 3 for 3 now with the last guardian.  they also go out of there way to develop and focus on unique one offs like flower, journey, heavy rain, sound shapes, echochrome, fat princess, pain, and demon's souls.

that's kind of unque in the industry.  most developers only abandon a franchise when sales die and it is part of what i've come to love about sony.  it's not that nintendo doesn't come up with new franchises ever but rather that sony seems more focused on doing it regularly and often.

so you listed 5 new nintendo franchises this gen (i'm sure you're missing some, layton is recent right?).  but i've listed 12 so far and i haven't yet included resistance, gravity daze, lair, heavenly sword, warhawk, tokyo jungle, motor storm, mod nation racers, playstation all stars, beyond, eye of judgement, escape plan..

I agree with the bottom line of this post, and for the last para both you and I know this isn't a list war and I did leave a few out. I'm also not the best Nintendo fan when it comes to listing exclusives but there are more and some very important which I think you can think of as much as I can.

I agree that Sony will move off popular franchises to let them breathe and that's a good thing, they certainly do it more than Nintendo. However, Nintendo also does it. When did the last home console Starfox get released, what was the last Metroid Prime? Where is Eternal Darkness and Donkey Kong in 3D? Alot of people see the NSMB craze and think "Nintendo is milking Mario". When that is true, you have to understand that NSMB is a real and unabandonable cash cow. It's sad, and I don't like the trend, but it's just a business fact, the game holds Nintendo afloat, as much as pokemon does. Now I'll admit that pokemon is more carefully managed, but how much hate did that series originally get? Only time made people accept Pokemon as a legit RPG. But prior to that it was Mario 64 and that's pretty much it during the N64 days.

Before Metroid Prime, Nintendo fans had to wait 8 years to get a new Metroid game after the cult favorite Super Metroid. EIGHT YEARS! After F-Zero GX, how long will it have been until the next F-Zero comes out? A while. Let alone Kid Icarus and Punch Out!! right?

Though I understand that Sony has done a phenomenal job at making good games this generation despite the financial trouble (the heart S.T.A.G.E. is talking about and I agree they are passionate about making games you can tell), they are really not the only ones though I can admit they currently are the forerunners.

In the meantime, similarly to Team Ico, Nintendo owns a studio called Monolith which has only released 1 sequel game for Nintendo's home consoles in Baten Kaidos Origins. Other than that they made Xenoblade and Disaster: Day of Crisis. You can't say they didn't try.

@S.T.A.G.E. Nintendo has only failed to release a substantial amount of new IPs for the hobbyist gamers. However in the grand scheme of things they have launched a plethora of new IPs this gen, just none that would please us generally speaking. You will be right if they fail to remedy that problem this gen, but with the WiiU's official vision I doubt this will happen and we see Nintendo doing things behind the scene that point to new experiences for the hobbyist gamer.
