.I don't know if they've designed the controller in such a way that you can remove the standard faceplate and interchange it with another, I hope so, that would be the sleekest option. Don't know if there's a picture of the GamePad from such an angle that would give a clue (anyone?).
It could however indeed be like mysticwolf says, where the plate clicks over the controller like a cover, making it a little thicker but would probably be cheaper. The Scribblenauts one could be like this (...which would mean you were right XD...).
