...didn't monster hunter have a subscription in japan?  not quite an MMO but same basic idea and from a popular franchise.  that might be comparable.  how did that do?

Was this an attempt to spin DQX into a flop?  If so, so you killed your own comparison.

MH did come to my mind because I faintly remember it having a subscirption for Japan, so you could possibly compare if you had access to the number of subscribers. Can't do a straight one as you can still play MH3 without fee and single player.

You're right, not everybody is - but he clearly was.

Anyways, Monster Hunter can be played and enjoyed without ever going online ever.  DQX cannot.  Even if it has multiplayer subscriptions, gamers will not stay on an MH for long because Capcom doesn't add new content - they just release standalone updates (G versions).  Even still beyond multiplayer subscriptions, MH is NOT an MMO even in the slightest.  So it's not a valid comparison.
