Boo for NSMB2. I doubt that the download numbers are significant (probably sub-100k up until now), so this isn't a good start for the game. What's more important are the sales in the long run though (both of the game and the 3DS hardware), so if this beast can stay above 10k units in weekly sales for a long time and raises the 3DS baseline a bit, it's still all good, because Japan already has a steady flow of appealing software.

The game's performance in the Western markets will be much more important, but if it's not doing hot in Japan, then people shouldn't expect too much for America and Europe (i.e. not an immediate turnaround from poor 3DS sales to great ones).

Sadly, true. Digital sales won't be as big as people wants to believe, so maybe it is at 680-700k right now. In western markets I'm expecting a ok performance.

I don't know.... why would NSMB2 flop like this though?  I feel like digital sales would explain it.

Series fatigue. When NSMB came out, it was revolutionary. Also the Mega Mushroom made the game larger than life. The Wii version was good because it added 4 players and improved graphics. This version I don't see add too much more other than the new coin mechanics. So possibly consumer fatigue. Like someone said in gaf, had it been NSMW, it may have been a different story.

However, I personally think the digital sales will be strong for the reason Mr Khan gave, and others I gave in last week's thread, including the massively available retail vouchers for DD.

So it's honestly up in the air at this point, and can go either way.
