That's what wikipedia says. They do mention Phantasy Star Online happened first but it wasn't open-world so it's essentially not a real MMO.

So to be a Massively Multiplayer Online game, it needs to be Open World? Sorry, but i dont think so.

On the Dreamcast, PC, Gamecube and Xbox, with cross-platform. But yeah, the 'false' MMOG can be forgotten, cuz ya know, its only Massively Multiplayer Online if it is Open World. Totally makes sense.
