I don't want to bring bad omen, but a friend of mine got his Phat dead after some years and the second day after he replaced it for a Slim, the Slim YLOD'ed on him. He was playing COD without resting the machine though, but I just wanted to say that you never know. Either way, you could stil have the HDD for you and use it for a new machine in the future.

if I buy a new machine, I will have a year long warranty, which is better than what I have now

But if you hold on to your working PS3 until it dies the death maybe a new slim would be even cheaper in the future. ;)
