So basically just every type of games? Platformer, FPS, action/adventure etc. Why does Mario get a free pass in situations like this?

Games like COD and Assassins Creed were tailor made for the scope provided by a home console.  Mario gets a free pass because the only thing similar throught titles like Mario Kart, Smash Bros, Galaxy, and New Super Mario Bros. 2 is the Mario Universe/Mushroom Kingdom likeness. Otherwise they all play much differently..........and sell a hell of a lot more.
