Yeah, but the PS3 will still be much more expensive than the PS2. Countries aren't just going to go from extremely poor to owning PS3's. There's going to be a long gradual transition from most consumers not being able to afford consoles, to affording Ps2s, to affording more expensive consoles, etc. The PS2 should enjoy decent sales during the long period when consumers are able to afford PS2s but not PS3s. Also factor in piracy. One of the reasons the PS2 is so popular in developing nations is because its easy to pirate - because they can't afford/obtain new or real games. The PS3 will not be so easy to pirate, so not only will the hardware be more expensive, but the software will be too. So yeah, its going to be a while before the PS3 breaks into developing markets. Until then, the PS2 should see moderate, steady sales. |
I would argue that there won't be a lot of countries that can't afford PS2's right now will be able to afford them in the next years. Or are you expecting that central africa will be a viable target market for the ps2 in the coming years? There really aren't a lot of countries left who are below the threshold of PS2 entertainment and those who are will not emerge in the coming years due to wars, genocide and extreme poverty. The countries that are viable markets right now on the other hand will gradually move on and emerge into more sophisticated markets. The PS2 might be cheaper and easier to hack, but that didn't prevent us from moving on, or did it? 99% of the stuff we buy today is not efficient or even reasonably priced but it's a matter of self-affirmation and a status symbol to show off their developement. The one thing that will not change is the fact that you need a PS2 to play PS2 games. Oh and hacking a PS2 increases the replacement rate drastically, from personal experience.
Ongoing bet with think-man: He wins if MH4 releases in any shape or form on PSV in 2013, I win if it doesn't.
