Super Mario Bros is hugely popular with both "core" and "casual" gamers, and as far as games that can be bundled with a system few would be seen as being as large of a value to as many gamers as Super Mario Bros U; this would certainly minimize people's complaints about a price increase of the console to $349. At the same time, I don't think Nintendoland has amazing appeal but most people would see it as a nice bonus when buying the tablet, and it would certainly minimize people's complaints about paying $100 for a controller. There would be an opportunity cost of bundling Super Mario Bros. U, after all Nintendo would lose all potential revenues from selling it on its own, but it could also contribute to a significant increase in console sales; and the licensing fees and other game sales of systems that would otherwise not be bought could compensate for the loss of sales. |
i'm not going to comment on nintendoland's appeal, i'm just going to say i think nintendo view's it as wii U's wii sports. ..a bit of software that's main purpose is to give the customer a taste of what the wii U can be used for.
bundeling mario just seems like a waste ... such a large % of nintendo buyers will get it one way or another that bundeling mario is effeively the same as a wii U $50 price cut. they'd just be better off still selling mario seperatly and dropping the cost of a wii U by $50 if they want to generate a powerful customer response.
I don't see there being any wii U tablet bundle at launch. no games need it so it seems pointless to even attempt to sell it. i'll bet nintendo is working an a new game that showcases the need for two tablets (their next wii play) and will be bundled with a tablet and available ~next holiday.
