I never really felt like the 3rd parties were putting the effort they could have done into the gamecube either though (not that I blame them, since the PS2 was so popular)

Do you not think so?  I mean, the PS2 stole many of the third-parties to exclusivity, but the Gamecube got pretty much as much stuff as the Xbox got - which was comparable to their market share, I suppose.

Certainly loads of PS2 stuff I played and enjoyed like Timesplitters 2, SSX 3, Tomb Raider: Legend, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, Spyro: A Hero's Tail, Crash Nitro Kart, The Sims: Bustin' Out, Crazy Taxi etc. came to the Gamecube.  All of those were relatively big third-party games.

Not to mention Soul Calibur 2, Splinter Cell, Tony Hawk, and the fact that GC had Resident Evil 4 and Viewtiful Joe first as well.  Gamecube had more cross-platform games than N64 (due to the cartridge format) or Wii (due to controls/tech).
